Information
Master H. David Clements,
School Owner/Chief Instructor
Master Clements holds a fifth-degree black belt in American Freestyle Karate as well as a third-
degree in Shotokan.

Master Clements served in the Air Force as a Security Policeman, specializing in personal
bodyguard details, covert operations and Air Base Ground Defense.  In 1986, his unit was rated
as the number nine special forces group in the world.  During his tour of duty, Master Clements
would take any style of martial arts available, sometimes as many as three simultaneously.

In 1990, Master Clements opened a martial arts school in Bridgewater, Virginia.  Within three
years the school grew to over 300 students.  In 1993, he opened a second school in Staunton,
Virginia.  In 1995, Master Clements moved to Nelson County, Virginia.  He sold the
Bridgewater school and travelled to Staunton for the next eight years to teach.  Wanting to be
closer to home, he sold the Staunton school to his student, now fourth degree black belt, John
Bowersox.  Master Clements then started a school in the town of Amherst, operating it for
several years before selling it to his student, Sam Wegert.  In March of 2009, Master Clements
opened his current studio, American Freestyle Karate Lexington.
Master Marc C. Conner,
Fourth-Degree Black Belt, Instructor
Master Conner has been studying martial arts since he was 19 years old.  He began studying
American Freestyle Karate under Master Clements in 2001, and received his First Degree
Black Belt in the AFK system in 2003.  He then went on to earn his Second and Third
Degree Black Belts, and in September 2011 he successfully tested for his Fourth Degree / 1st
Master’s Level Black Belt.  In addition, Master Conner holds the rank of Second Degree
Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, and has also trained extensively in T’ai Chi Ch’uan.  He has
competed in many state-wide tournaments, most recently placing second in Traditional
Japanese Forms in the 2008 VKA tournament.  He has taught under Master Clements for
nearly ten years.  He lives in Lexington with his wife and three sons, all of whom hold black
belts in karate, earned under Master Clements.

F. Alexey DeBrot
First-Degree Black Belt, Instructor
Mr. Debrot began karate in Staunton with Master Clements when he was 9 years old. Due to
unfortunate back problems, Mr. Debrot was forced to take a leave of absence for two years. He
later came back and received his First-degree Black Belt when he was 14 from Master Bowersox.
After that, he assisted Master Bowersox in teaching parts of classes.

Mr. Debrot later went to Franciscan University, a small college in Ohio, where he studied
philosophy and business.  Just this past summer, Mr. Debrot came to visit Master Clements here in
Lexington to talk about taking classes  to stay in shape. After participating in a few classes, Master
Clements offered him a full time job.  Mr. DeBrot's goal is to have a school of his own one day.
